Mifflinburg United Methodist Church Roof Repair Project

The Challenge

The Mifflinburg United Methodist Church experienced significant storm damage to its steeple roof, resulting in 80 to 110 loose or missing pieces of slate. The falling slate created a serious liability concern for the church, as debris posed a danger to pedestrians on the sidewalk and street below.

Church leadership was also concerned that the exposed areas of the bell tower could lead to interior water damage if not addressed quickly. The project presented unique logistical challenges due to the steeple's height of approximately 85 feet, requiring specialized equipment access and careful planning for street and sidewalk closures during the work.

The Solution

Our team completed a full steeple roof replacement, removing the damaged slate and installing CertainTeed Carriage House shingles in Black Pearl. To safely access the 85-foot steeple, we utilized a 135-foot man lift with a two-person crew. All materials and debris were carefully raised and lowered using the lift to protect the property and surrounding areas.

The scope focused specifically on the steeple shingles, leaving the existing metal roofs on the corners and metalwork below the slate unchanged. Almond-colored edge metal provided a finished look that complemented the historic architecture.

The Results

The church received a complete steeple roof replacement that eliminated the falling debris hazard and protected the interior of the bell tower from further damage. The project was completed within the 1-2 week timeframe requested by church leadership, prioritizing both speed and quality as they required.
